We all know that it’s impossible to truly forecast the future, but with a little help from technical analysis, we can observe prevailing market trends and attempt to ride the wave.
So why do we care about the current market trend? Well, think of trading like swimming in a river, you can swim with the current or against it; in both cases you are performing the activity of swimming, but swimming with the current is much easier, and you’ll probably be more successful getting to where your going.
When determining the trend there are three potential outcomes; up, down, and sideways. The good news here is that we start this process with a 33.3% chance of being correct, even if we were to randomly choose one of the three potential outcomes. To better our chances of being right, we’re going to add a few simple steps to our procedure.
To start our observation we must decide on a timeframe, are we trading short-term trends where we will be in and out of a trade quickly (like a few days to a few weeks), medium-term trends where we may maintain a position from a few weeks to a couple of months, or are we investing for the long-term with a buy-and-hold strategy. Once we’ve determined our timeframe, this is the length of the trend we want to examine.
The first step in assessing the trend is absurdly simple… pull up your favorite charting software, or surf on over to your favorite financial website and pull up a chart of your favorite stock. Next, set the chart timeframe to the timeframe we determined above. Finally, compare the first price on the chart to the last price on the chart (or if the chart allows, draw a straight line from one to the other); the price will either be trending up, down, or relatively sideways. Easy enough right? We could stop here but in nearly every instance of technical analysis we want to find some sort of confirming indicator.
The confirming indicator we’re going to use today is volume; the amount of daily trading in a particular index, sector, security, etc. In most cases, the charting software or financial website chart will already have a volume chart displayed with the price chart. Spotting the trend in volume is the same as for spotting the trend in price; simply compare the first value on the volume chart with the last value on the chart… unfortunately in many cases the trend won’t be as clear, especially for longer timeframes.
To simplify the use of these two indicators together, let’s explore all the potential outcomes.
Price up and volume up = strong upward trend
Price up and volume down = upward trend that may turn downward
Price up and volume sideways = weak upward trend
Price down and volume up = strong downward trend
Price down and volume down = downward trend that may turn upward
Price down and volume sideways = weak downward trend
Price sideways and volume up = sideways trend that may turn upward
Price sideways and volume down = sideways trend that may turn downward
Price sideways and volume sideways = sideways trend
At this point we have determined the direction for a single stock, but this isn’t really the entire process that should take place. Ideally this process would be performed with the equity you are interested in, followed by the sector that the equity belongs to, and finally to the index the sector is in. As above, explore all of the possibilities of up, down, and sideways results. Doing this type of research and comparing the results will give a much better indication of the strength and direction of the trend.
The process we’ve discussed in this article for determining market trends is simple, easy to use and understand, and intended as a starting point for beginning investors. There are many other methods and technical indicators we could use or add to the charts, but we’ll leave those for another day.

I have long owned bull terriers. I have an American red nosed bull terrier named Jack. Commonly misnomered the “pit bull”, Jack is NOT a pit bull. He’s never been purposely fought, nor has he ever set foot inside a ring. No one has ever gambled on him fighting, nor is he allowed to fight.
Jack is a BULL TERRIER. Period. And, as such, I think he could be a really good advocate for his breed. He always has lots of energy, he is super obedient, and he is always eager to please. He’s probably one of the best dogs any dog lover could hope to have.
As I’m putting a site together for Jack’s honor, called thelivingdog.com, I decided on a slogan. Because dogs deserve a life, not just an owner.
I see it time and again, people just have a dog as a ‘back yard fixture’. There was this couple living on Whirlwind Trail in Round Rock, Texas that was a great example. They owned at least 3 Dachshunds, or “sausage dogs” as I like to call them. These dogs were uber frustrated. Never given any real interaction, they were just back yard ornaments. Something the owners can say “Look at my dogs” and pet them whenever the mood strikes.
As a result these dogs were SO frustrated. All they ever did is bark. One bark was frustration, the other bark was anger, and another bark was the normal territorial behavior.
During my brief stay next door to them I tried to set an example by playing lots of fetch with Jack in the back yard next door, but in the end they didn’t care. They ignored the dogs. How lonesome they must have been, how sad their existence is. I could hear stress in each dog’s bark. What a sad way to live.
Can you imagine never being allowed to leave your bedroom? That’s what it must feel like for those dogs. I was sad for them, but in the end it was a good motivator to “stick with the program” with Jack.
I get Jack out at least once a day, and no less than 3-5 times a day I take him to the open corner lot for some high intensity fetch. He loves it, and as a result hes in great shape for 7 years old, and he’s got lots of energy. Plus, he’s not frustrated.
Its a shame that everyone gives the bull terrier a bad reputation. Jack is very gentle. He’d never hurt a child under any circumstances, and he’s even cat friendly. Heck, if you looked at the pics on thelivingdog.com you’d see he’s even got a side car that is a small pup. Another male in fact, and yet Jack would dare not harm him.
The American Bull Terrier is a working breed, and as such they love to have a “job”. Even if that job is frisbee (which Jack goes through several disks a month). If you don’t give them a “job” they will make one up, which usually consists of barking loudly at strange noises or digging to China.
You can make a monster out of any dog, but if you socialize them well as pups, and constantly re-enforce boundaries with them, you’ll be a much more satisfied owner, and your dog will have a much greater life.
My dog is my friend. I take him places. I don’t think he cannot handle things, I give him a shot at it. Since we’ve been together so long now, Jack responds to my guidance in the form of negative tone disapproval. Basically a “growl” ‘nuh-uh’ at him, and he is quick to come back into his boundaries.
Dogs are social animals, and want to “lead the pack” so they will always test their boundaries. You have to lead them, not follow them, or you will lose your authority. When you define a boundary for them, you have to stay with it for life.
Health is an important factor too. In fact last year Jack contracted a deadly form of skin cancer. He’s recovered now, but it took some surgeries and a lot of money before he was all healed up. In my eyes it was worth it. Fortunately though, I found this site called “Liar Marketing” which had lots of good coupon codes for “1-800-petmeds“.

Sir, thanks for taking the time for this discussion. We understand that ICTS Europe offers a new cargo security inspection service called rascargo. Please tell our readers in which ways RASCargo differs from hand search and x-ray screening
Detection systems are all tested today on three main factors. Those factors are detection rates, false alarm rates, and cargo volume screened per a given time. Since RASCargO is a system which is based on scent detection in very big volumes, and by the most sensitive detector in the world (K9), it has exceptional performance in all of those three factors. All other accessible methods achieve good results in only two of those three parameters, whichdemonstrate the benefits offered by RASCargO.
Think how long it would take to hand search a 40ft truck, while RASCargO can screen it in 15 minutes, with very good detection rates and the lowest False alarm rates currently identified, and more or less the same goes for X-ray.
Remote Air Sampling for Canine Olfaction (R.A.S.C.O.) seems to imply that the samples are taken to the canine rather than having the bomb detection dogs checking the cargo directly. Is there a reason for a remote check?
There are a couple of reasons for that. The first one is based on the well known fact that while explosives detection dogs search continuously they get very tired after about 30 minutes of work. In RASCargO a dogs will clear a lorry in a second of sniffing its connected filter, thus escalating its capacity (about 150 filters per shift), and without tiring the dogs too much. Another reason is the ability to control climate conditions in a supervised analysis center, which creates idyllic conditions for the dogs to perform at their best.
We understand that RASCargo has been researched for years by the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency as a means of clearing “unknown” cargo. Do you anticipate it eventually been recognized as an approved method for ‘known’ cargo?
The RASCO method was born in Europe and adapted for aviation security, thanks to the inovation of the UK government. It is in the UK under DfT and DSTL that most of the research and fine-tuning of the system was made. In the last few years the French regulators got involved as well and contributed with input of high value to the system. As a fact we know that screening all cargo, is a task, which is extremely difficult to reach. Therefore, an optimisation of routines is required for targeting the unknown freight at first. Imposing screening on known freight might be a burden on the industry, which could risk efficiency of processes, which are so important to that industry. However, as a spot check RASCargO could be a very valuable tool, since it is very friendly to current processes and does not require major changes.
What is the smallest amount of explosive, which can be detected, or would it be any amount?
This information is a function of mass per volume, and we have very credible data on the detection capabilities, which are very encouraging. The authorities, which should know about that, have this sensible information.
Are the canines trained on a variety of scents or do they specialize on particulars?
Explosives detection dogs can memorize up until 12-15 different scents. They are trained on the scents which are required by regulators and which change from time to time. Once a canine is trained on the system, adding a new target scent is a matter of 10 days approximately.
Now that security measures are increasing, time becomes an issue regarding cargo loading. How does RASCargO fare as far as time is concerned?
RASCargO is undeniably the fastet way to screen big volumes. In some models, which we apply today, the freight is being screened during its idle time. That means that while cargo is stocked during 30 minutes to an hour while its paper work is being done, our team collects vapour samples from that shipment, delivers them to the analysis center, and sends the clearance in less than 30 minutes. During all that time almost no change for current processes of the cargo agent or airline is made.
Do they receive a different training from the explosives detection dogs generally used to detect bombs at venues, etc?
The training, which is the heart of the system, and the actual intellectual property of that system, is very different from conventional canines. Conventional detection dogs would be very poor RASCargO canines and vice versa, even though they are all trained as explosives detection dogs.
Are the dogs trained according to the airport, port or location?
The training has a couple of stages, and one of them is the adaptation to customer needs. Climate conditions are not much of an issue here, since the dogs work in a climate controlled closed area. But the dogs need to get familiar with the environment in order for them to perform well. We believe that it is our duty to create the best conditions for the dogs to succeed. once this is achieved, the dogs are a remarkable and viable detectors.
How does the false positive rates compare with other usual methods?
The system uses two canines for the examination of each filter. The results are being introduced into a matrix, which gives the search result of a run made by two dogs. As a result, the systems False positive rate is extremely low, in the range of 1% - 2%.
Which advantages you can tell your readers that RASCargO has over hand-search?
Very simple. Higher detection rates and speed of clearance, which is unmatched.
Since 2004 RASCargO is been in Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. What can you tell us about the results?
The results are very encouraging, we already serve on regular basis major players such as DHL, Panalpina, Lan Cargo and many others. Clients are very satisfied and the fact that business grows steadily is a good indicator for that satisfaction. As per detection rates and false alarms, I cannot say the level, but I can say that it is better by far in comparison to other systems.

Thinking about buying a dog?
So you’ve decided to purchase a dog. Owning a dog can be the beginning of years of happiness as the special bond between humans and canines exceeds even the greatest of expectations. However, to ensure the best relationship with your dog, you must be prepared for some important responsibilities. Keep the following questions in mind as we go along. If you need to see many quality accessories for your dog please check Dog Lovers
Have I found the right breed to fit into my lifestyle and home?
Will I have enough time to spend training, grooming and exercising a dog?
Am I willing to spend the resources to ensure the best future for a dog?
The breed for you
Is there a breed you have had your eye on, or are you confused about how to select a dog? In either case, you should do some homework to make sure that you select the right dog for you and your family. The bonus of selecting a purebred dog is their predictability in size, coat, care requirements and temperament. Knowing what your cute puppy will look like and the kind of care he will need as an adult is a key in selecting the breed for you.
Several websites that can help you choose a dog include Pet Net’s Select-A-Pet and the Animal Planet Pet Selector.
You and your dog
Too frequently, common sense goes out the window when it comes to buying a puppy. This seems to be even truer when the purchase is by a family with children. Buying a dog is like buying anything else; the more you know before you buy, the better off you will be. This advice applies to all aspects of buying your dog, from selecting the breed to deciding where to obtain the puppy. We strongly recommend that you spend time investigating before buying. Remember, dogs are for life.
Selectapet can help you begin your research with its pictures and descriptions of each breed. Your initial research will help you narrow the field when it comes to selecting the breed for you and your lifestyle. Remember to consider your dog’s lifestyle, too. And for extended research, consult the resources at your local library.
While investigating, always be honest with yourself. The Bearded Collie you fell in love with because of his lush coat is indeed beautiful, but are you going to be able to brush this coat every day as it requires? Maybe a short coated dog better suits your busy lifestyle. Think about the size of your house or your apartment.
Will that Golden Retriever be happy in your apartment? The Golden Retriever is a larger working dog who requires a lot of exercise. Do you have a fenced yard so he can go out safely? If not, can you afford to install a fence? These are crucial questions regarding the safety of your dog and being a responsible neighbour.
Always remember, it is okay to change your mind about which breed you want or if you want the responsibility of owning a dog at all. Owning a dog is a big responsibility! Talk to breeders. Ask them lots of questions; we all know there are no stupid questions. A responsible breeder will eagerly answer your questions and share his or her experience and knowledge with you. Where can you find breeders and see dogs? At dog shows (see upcoming Activities and Events). Also contact DOGS Victoria affiliated clubs for their recommendations.
Selecting a breeder
Buy your puppy from a responsible and well-respected breeder. This cannot be stressed enough. Responsible breeders are concerned with the betterment of the breed. For example, they work on breeding healthier dogs with the appropriate temperament for their breed. Your DOGS Victoria breeder referral contact will direct you to a breeder who is concerned with the future of the puppy. Once you select a breeder, screen the breeder. Ask to see at least one of the parents (the dam or the sire) of your puppy. See how the dogs in your breeder’s home interact with your breeder. Are they friendly and outgoing or do they shy away? The responsible breeder will be screening you, too, looking for the best home for each puppy.
How much does a puppy cost?
This is not the time to hunt for a bargain. Your new puppy will be a member of your family for his lifetime, so you’ll want to make a wise investment. Ask breeders and breed club members to get a rough idea of prices, but don’t make decision on price alone - more expensive isn’t necessarily better. Make sure you find the right dog for YOU. And remember, the price of the puppy is just the beginning of the costs. Remember to check out many great pet accessories at Best Deals
Can you afford a puppy?
The purchase price of your puppy is not the only cost you have to consider. Be aware that the puppy you bring home will need proper care. Of course, it will need food and health care, (a dog needs annual vaccinations and regular worming treatments). Your puppy will also need little things like a collar with identification, a bowl, and a lead. It will also need to be registered with your local council or shire. Evaluate your budget; ask yourself if you really can afford a dog. Dog Ownership = Responsibility.
Take the time to ask yourself these questions and to make an educated decision. You and your dog will be happier for it. There is no doubt that a puppy is a cuddly bundle of joy, but it is also a huge responsibility.
Caring for your dog
All dogs must be cared for daily. This means proper diet, exercise, grooming and veterinary attention. There are many excellent guides on all facets of dog care. We recommend you have some other authoritative reference source available. Do not attempt to be your own veterinarian! All dogs should be regularly examined by a veterinarian and vaccinated against the major infectious canine diseases.
Your dog and your neighbors
All dog owners must be aware of their responsibilities to their neighbours, both those who live in the area immediately around their residence and their neighbours in the broader sense of the community as a whole. Dogs, for all the pleasure they are, can be a nuisance to your neighbours if not trained. Remember, excessive barking can be annoying. Always keep your dog on a leash or inside a fenced yard when exercising. Remember to pick up after your dog. Forestall problems for yourself and your dog and all dog lovers by being a good neighbour.
Obedience training for everyone
One way to make your dog a good neighbour is through obedience training. A poorly behaved dog is a problem for everyone. Nothing is more frustrating than attempting to catch a dog that will not “come” when you call. A well trained dog is not only a pleasure to own, he is a goodwill ambassador for the entire canine community. A well-behaved dog is the result of the dog’s owner being willing to work with the dog regularly in a systematic manner. Obedience classes are available in most communities (see Obedience Clubs). Time spent training your dog is time well spent.
